Costumes by Sartoria Tirelli

A exhibition celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Sartoria Tirelli and its magnificent creations

Opera di Firenze's Foyer - June 16th 2014

“I costumi della Sartoria Tirelli” – Costumes by the Sartoria Tirelli – is an exhibition dedicated to the famous Roman atelier, and a tribute from the world of fashion upon the Sartoria’s 50th anniversary (1964-2014).
Beginning at 6:00 p.m., on Monday, 16 June in the Foyer of the Opera di Firenze, the exhibition will be dedicated to eight iconic costumes that are symbolic of the atelier’s grand, history-making tradition on the operatic stage and in film, with 22 nominations and 15 Oscars.

Umberto Tirelli, founder of Tirelli Costumi, amassed an amazing collection that now comprises over 15,000 original garments - one of the most important clothing collections anywhere in the world and about 170,000 costumes the Sartoria made for movies and opera.
Umberto Tirelli had a very important relationship with the city of Florence that was “sealed”, in 1986, by his extraordinary gift of 300 items (150 authentic pieces and 150 film and theater costumes) to the Galleria del Costume of Palazzo Pitti, which in turn was celebrated by his being awarded the “Fiorino d’Oro” – the gold florin - from the city. Tirelli’s legacy is being carried on thanks to the skills and dedication of Dino Trappetti in guaranteeing that this Italian excellence will indeed have a future .

The inauguration of the exhibition will be attended by Gabriella Pescucci, who won an Oscar for her costumes for the Martin Scorsese movie The Age of Innocence, one of the eight iconic costumes on display.
Pier Luigi Pizzi – one of the top international directors, set and costume designers, – and Dino Trappetti, the current owner of the Sartoria and historic right-hand man of the founder, Umberto Tirelli, will also be there. They will be the ambassadors of the first act of the Firenze Hometown of Fashion program.
During the inauguration, a movie produced by the Rai will be screened about the most significant  milestones  of the Sartoria Tirelli: The voice of Isabella Rossellini will be the underlying theme connecting the contributions from Luchino Visconti, Franco Zeffirelli, Piero Tosi, Giuseppe Tornatore, Danilo Donati, Maurizio Millenotti and Ms. Pescucci herself.

Each costume in the exhibition, designed by set-designer and director Piero Maccarinelli and architect, Carlo Lococo, will be displayed alongside of an image of the film or opera for which it was made.
The masterpieces on display include a dress created by Lila de Nobili and worn by Maria Callas in “La Traviata” directed by Luchino Visconti (1955), Silvana Mangano’s mise in “Death in Venice”, the costumes designed by Gabriella Pescucci for the “The Brothers Grimm” directed by Terry Gilliam, the costume realized for the stage production of  “Bianca and Falliero” by Pier Luigi Pizzi and the costume for Anna Karenina by Maurizio Millenotti who, with Tosi, defined the working guidelines of the Sartoria Tirelli.
Visitors will be further drawn into the magnificent atmosphere of the exhibition by the tableaux vivants that will welcome guests in the Foyer, and “accompany” them into the theater.

Thanks to Florence City Council and the Maggio Musicale, lit will be possible to visit the exhibition free of charge from 17 to 20 June, from 10.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m.
